As a regular update every year, Dell brought the latest XPS13 9380 to CES in January this year, and it was officially put on the shelves a few days ago. As a popular model, I believe many people will be interested in what changes the "2019 Edition XPS13" brings. It happened that I personally reviewed the 2018 XPS13 9370 last year. This time, I had the opportunity to borrow the latest XPS13 9380. I can just make a targeted comparison and see where the latest XP13 has upgraded and brought those changes.

The article is long, too lazy to look down:

1. Added "Frost Dew White" color matching to achieve a true all-white host;

2. The old "nostril camera" moves up;

3. The CPU is updated to "Whiskey Lake", and the overall performance is slightly enhanced;

4, performance & endurance is still the benchmark of the same level;

5, low-profile memory frequency is also upgraded to 2133 frequency

6, the mold basically continues 9370.

Interested in detailed evaluation, you can continue to look down.

"Leave blank for amazing"

Adding a color is not too big or too small for a product, especially for "XPS13". The previous XPS13 had a dilemma, which was the family shell design. As a result, the 10,000-yuan model was indistinguishable from the 5,000-yuan Lingyue. It was difficult to distinguish the previous generation 9370. With the combination of "sands gold" shell + white inner surface, the frame is further compressed to 4mm level, and the 9380 after a year is further upgraded for the shell, adding a "frost dew white" color scheme.

The newly added "Frost Dew White" is not simply white. The physical feeling and color are more similar to the ceramic coating, and there is a little matte feeling in sunlight. The BC surface still continues the settings of the previous generation. The white frame + GORE thermal insulation film C surface, that is, the all-white body setting on the XPS13 is truly realized. Considering that many people have a passion for white juice, the 9380 change is really important.

Both the A and D sides of the fuselage are processed in this way, and even the D-face screws have been "whitened".

The camera of the previous generation 9370 is located near the hinge below the screen, so it is slightly embarrassing to use, and it will have the effect of "nostril amplifier". In order to solve this problem, Dell redesigned the camera assembly and the size became 2.25mm. Above the top screen, it hardly affects the thickness of the screen border.

The C surface still continues with the combination of white silicon fiber + GORE ™ insulation material + Velvecron SR-1 ™ antifouling coating, which can prevent yellowing and have heat insulation effects at the same time, preventing hot hands caused by long-term use. It is currently the most white model. Best solution.

Because the camera component is too small, there is no way to add face recognition, but the power button is still an integrated fingerprint recognition button. Size, 1.23kg (depending on configuration), volume and weight are still its advantages, especially under such performance release. Picture comparison mbp15 2018 with "Principle"

UHD4K touch screen

The 9380 in my hand should belong to the high-end version, so the screen is equipped with a 4K resolution touch screen version. The supplier is still from Sharp (really a good friend of XPS13), and the screen still uses the full-fit screen technology and the fourth generation of gorillas. glass.

Compared with the 9370 1080P version of the screen that I experienced in the previous generation, the screen exquisiteness has naturally improved a lot, and the 13-inch screen size has achieved the effect of invisible pixels to the naked eye. Daily use must be scaled by 200% or even 300%.

In terms of screen quality, the performance of this screen is basically equivalent to "desktop". The brightness has reached 400 nits and 100% sRGB color gamut coverage. The actual test shows that the brightness balance is average, and then there is a common high-resolution response speed problem (MPB 2018 The same is true), other parameters are considered good, Dell's monitors have always been level.

The actual screen shooting below, D750 + S50 shooting, the output is only converted to format. Look at the picture in this way is not very similar to the screen on P, the high resolution + good screen performance brings the fineness of the picture.

Beast Performance

In fact, the performance and tuning of the XPS13 9380 is a bit similar to the 2018 version of the MacBook Pro (i7 version, updated bios). It is to maintain high energy release while taking into account quietness, which brings a problem. Although the heat dissipation scale of XPS13 is good enough, But still unable to satisfy that wild heart.

This configuration on my hand uses the latest Whiskey Lake eighth-generation i7 8565U processor, 16GB dual-channel LDDR3 2133 memory 512G SSD.

After refreshing the latest BIOS, the performance release of this machine is actually very full, or rather brutal.

In various theoretical tests, it clearly exceeds the i7 8550U of the previous generation 9370. This aspect benefits from the i7-8565U's high frequency limit of 4.6GHz (0.6GHz higher than the i7-8550U). On the other hand, it is Dell The wild performance of the side is released, and the actual power consumption for a long time is more than 15W. Only after the temperature wall of 100 ° is triggered, the frequency reduction processing will be performed, but the calm mode will be turned on again.

What is the performance improvement brought by this? Take the actual application as an example. For example, in the Corona 1.3 test, the rendering time of the previous generation 9370 was 6 minutes and 42 seconds (already faster than the fourth-generation i7 standard). The rendering time of this generation 9380 was 6 minutes and 2 seconds. 40 seconds. The export time of Lr hundred sheets of raw materials took about 4 minutes in the last test, and this test only took 2 minutes and 32 seconds (of course, here we must also consider that the export time caused by the new Lr version is faster). However, in terms of performance release, the XPS13 is still the benchmark for the PC camp, and even more exaggerated is that if you can control the thermal optimization, the i7-8565U on the XPS13 can even approach the performance of the standard CPU.

This time the built-in SSD uses Intel (last Samsung), the performance is a bit faster, of course, it does not rule out that different versions use different SSDs.

Another thing to note is that this time the XPS is more "good" a change, that is, the low frequency of the 8G memory version is also unified to 2133, the previous generation of low frequency memory is 1866.

In the latest Lr and Pr test project, it takes only 2 minutes and 32 seconds to transfer 100 raw pictures. How fast is this performance? The similar test of the i7 8750H of my XPS15 before was 2 minutes and 8 seconds. Although considering the different versions of Lr, this speed is very fast.

And Pr exports a period of more than 4 minutes of 1080P video, it only takes 1 minute 21 seconds, daily video clips are also fine (unless it is 4K).

The performance of UHD620, in simple terms, 1080P LOL, high special effects, is probably stable at about 60 frames.

Choose memory capacity & pay attention to heat dissipation

When buying XPS13 9380 model configuration, in addition to color and screen resolution, you must also determine the memory capacity. Like the 9370, the 9380 has on-board memory, which cannot be upgraded and expanded, and the nuclear display itself will share memory, so personal recommendations It is best to start with 16GB of memory; the SSD part has only one removable slot, and you can still upgrade it yourself in the future.

The heat dissipation is good. As for the XPS13 9380, it is actually not easy to say a sentence. For example, the official fan control tuning is quiet, so the noise is very low at full load. The size of the radiator is also good. Fan double heat pipe; if you are not a roast chicken party, the machine has better temperature control in daily applications (such as when I do rendering and the temperature of the image export is basically 70 degrees), but the problem is that Dell's current performance release is relatively relaxed The actual CPU of the XPS13 9380 often runs at 2xW or even 50W. Only after reaching the 100 ° temperature wall will the frequency be reduced, and after a while it will start to increase frequency and increase power consumption. The result is that if you give XPS13 a good heat dissipation environment, it will give you an exaggerated release of CPU performance, so personally I recommend daily use, such as when you use it in a fixed position, try to be targeted Optimized heat dissipation, such as the bottom hollow bracket to increase air convection, and even directly adopt an active air intake bracket radiator.

The short-term power consumption of PL2 can even reach 51W, which is an exaggeration. . . And PL1 is basically more than 15W in operation. The special power consumption control strategy has led to the electrocardiogram of the roast chicken test, which is very similar to MBP2018.

Taking the latest R20 test as an example, the heat dissipation is good or not, compared to the entire rendering result, it can be close to 150cb.

Everyday if you are not in an environment with extremely poor heat dissipation, the performance of R20 for 10 consecutive tests is relatively stable. After all, the current R20 test process will take longer than the previous R15, so the actual test market will become longer and more advanced. Power control.

Still excellent battery life

In terms of battery life, the 9380 performs basically the same as the 9370. The battery capacity is 52Wh. Running the PCMARK08 test has an advanced battery life of 5 hours. Practical applications (entertainment, work) can basically achieve 8-12 hours of performance. Coupled with support for C port charging, going out can be easily solved with a small PD charger or mobile power supply.

Double lightning port

The extended performance of Dell is relatively extreme. Like the 9370, the 9380 has a dual lightning port and a USB 3.1 Type-C port. All three ports support power supply and DP signal output. For the full Type-C port, although there is a certain inconvenience at present, double lightning is really only an advantage as an extended performance, although this also causes a problem, that is, you remember to buy a C-port dock .

1 MicroSD card reader slot | 1 USB-C 3.1 port (supports power supply function and DisplayPort) | headphone jack | wedge-shaped security lock slot | 2 Thunderbolt ™ 3 ports (4 lanes of third-generation PCI Expss; Supports Power Supply and DisplayPort) | Battery Level Indicator

The thunderbolt port has many benefits. Although the XPS13 is still the weak chicken UHD620 nuclear display, it can still achieve 5K signal output with the thunderbolt port, and daily 4K playback is no problem. If you have a requirement for the performance of the graphics card, an external eGPU is believed to be more effective than that.

Accessories for XPS13

1. wireless mouse

How to choose a mouse? In the list of daily recommendations, I believe that the highest probability is probably the Logitech MX series, and the MX with the XPS13 is probably the MX Anywhere 2S white version. But today I am mainly reminding you that currently including Logitech MX series and all other Bluetooth wireless mice, the return rate in Bluetooth mode is only 100Hz, and the gaming mouse is basically 500Hz, 1000Hz, which is a very important parameter Many people will tell you how much the DPI of the high-end Bluetooth mouse has reached, so you can move faster under high resolution, but it will not tell you that the mouse refresh rate is only 100Hz, and what is the mouse return rate useful? Is to make the mouse pointer more sticky, where the real point, the cheapest gaming mouse may have 1000Hz.

So in fact, if you are not particularly concerned about the need to use Bluetooth mode (such as use at the workstation, you can connect the docking station + mouse receiver), you want the best wireless mouse experience, personal recommendations can consider Logitech G304, the price is not to say , The endurance is strong, the performance is strong, the only disadvantage for notebook users is that an external receiver is required, and the receiver is still A port.

If it is a bluetooth mouse, I actually like to use this IKEA mark mouse when I go out. The special storage design is really extremely small.

2. USB-C docking station DA300

There are many USB-C docks on the market, including materials and the number of expansion ports. I believe that many people like to have many interfaces, and it is best to use a metal case, but for the actual portable (XPS13 positioning), I still recommend Dell's DA200 and DA300. The quality is reliable (USB-C in the market) Docking stations are often unstable (various connections are unstable), compact and does not take up storage space, the plastic case is not easy to scratch the surface of the notebook. Although some people will say that these two do not support charging, you must know that the three C ports of the XPS13 can be charged. . . So there is no worry about charging at all.

If you want to fully use the power of the Thunderbolt port, you can consider buying Dell's TB1516 Thunderbolt 3 docking station in one step. Although the price is relatively moving, the real Thunderbolt 3 docking station on the market is not cheap. It is estimated that for a period of time, it is the most mainstream high-speed port, and it is still worth investing in accessories.

3. Type-C port display

The most suitable external display for XPS13 is naturally a Type-C port display, such as its own S2719DC, which is almost a perfect match.

A USB-C cable is used for data transmission and power supply, and the power supply of 45W just meets the requirements of XPS13.

The quality of the screen itself is good enough.

4, PD charger, mobile power

XPS13 comes with a compact C-port PD power supply (45W). When going out or traveling, you can easily share the PD charger and mobile power with your mobile phone. If you don't care about the charging speed, even 18W PD charging can help.

If you are recommended to buy extra, considering the extreme portability, you can look at the GaN 30w PD charger just released by Anker just now, it can be said to be the most suitable. (Unless you plan to take the XPS13 out for video rendering, or the power consumption of most scenes is about 30W)

I mainly use Anker on my own business trip: PD + Hub cross-border two-in-one mobile power supply, with a capacity of 19,000 milliamps, and a multi-port output of up to 52W, which is more suitable for business trips and multi-device environments.

Two-way PD fast charging. This may not be much to say. After all, it is currently standard for high-end mobile power. Another useful place is mainly in HUB mode. Therefore, a mobile power out is equivalent to laptop power, mobile power and C. The port docking station was also bought at that time. The actual measurement with XPS13 can well charge and increase battery life.

The actual capacity is 71Wh, which is less than 100Wh, which is a common rule of airlines. You can safely carry it on board.

5, liner bag

XPS13 this type of thin and light, with the inner bag is naturally the most suitable and good, the current official purchase also comes with the official inner bag, texture and fit are definitely the best.

If you choose it yourself, you can buy a liner bag with a handle. For example, before 9370, it was a model from Yiliike. Its size and volume were similar to ordinary liner bags, and there were some portable compartments that could be used to place mouse accessories, power supplies and other notebook accessories. There is a simple handle for easy going out, and now a double strap version is also available.

6. Notebook stand:

As mentioned earlier, for the XPS13, the principle of purchasing a notebook stand is to optimize auxiliary cooling. First of all, you should pay attention to the position of the air inlet at the bottom of the notebook. When purchasing a corresponding notebook stand, firstly, it will not block the air inlet. The passive stand can raise the height of the notebook to increase the air intake to a certain extent. Radiator) Pay attention to the place where the fan sends the air to the air inlet. It should be noted that the place where the fan leaves is the blower, not the fan shaft. There is no wind in that position, so don't put it in the wrong position.

In addition, there is also a USB-C docking station with a + stand function on the market that can also be considered.

Pay attention to the hollowed-out areas marked with the air inlet of XPS13.

From the perspective of simple hardware configuration, the XPS13 9380 does not seem to have changed much compared to 9370. It is just a simple routine upgrade, but the actual upgrade brings greater improvements than expected, because the current performance is really a bit " Crazy ".

Without changing the mold, the comprehensive performance of the XPS13 9380 is almost close to perfection (appearance, screen, battery life, performance, and even scalability). At present, if you insist on the disadvantages, there is probably only the price, and the thermal control solution is It will cause the temperature to trigger the temperature wall in the case of roasted chicken, but this is understandable. After all, whoever roasts the machine all day in daily life or controls the noise better, users will be more sensitive. For the next generation of XPS13, my personal expectation is probably when to change the design.
