AMD option joins Surface Laptop for the first time

As a technology giant with a market value of more than one trillion US dollars, Microsoft is recognized by people around the world with the Windows operating system. Unlike the huge success in software, Microsoft is a bit inferior in hardware products. However, the Surface series products still have many fans. Among them, the Surface Laptop notebooks have gone through three generations. The Surface Laptop 3 was launched in October last year. The 13-inch and 15-inch versions were introduced for the first time. This is also the first "Tianpaier" notebook using AMD processing.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 review

Although this new generation, Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 has added a 15-inch screen version, the body size has increased a lot, but the performance in terms of thin and light is still amazing. The 15-inch version is made of an all-aluminum alloy body with a thickness of only 14.69mm and a weight of 1.54kg. (13.5-inch version is 14.51mm thick and weighs 1.28kg)

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 is equipped with Ryzen mobile processor jointly customized with AMD for the first time, and has been jointly tuned by engineers from both sides. Recently, the 15-inch elegant black version of the Surface Laptop 3 came to my site. Let's take a closer look at whether the first cooperation between Microsoft and AMD can surprise us.

Appearance: Continuing the previous generation design, adding C-face metal keyboard

In terms of design, Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 continues the previous generation standard, simple and elegant, and outstanding value. It uses an all-metal body, and the Founder's shape is very tough. The "Tianpaier" LOGO in the center of the A side has been polished. The silver body shines against the black body and the look is excellent.

The surface of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 still uses a wedge design. It is thin at the front and thick at the front. The overall average thickness is 14.69mm. With a weight of 1.54kg, as a large 15-inch screen notebook, this portability control is still very good. , Especially the thickness, is only 0.18mm more than the 13.5-inch version.

In terms of color matching, Surface Laptop 3 offers four colors, which are divided into bright platinum, gray cobalt blue, sandstone gold, and elegant black. However, there are some differences between the 13.5-inch and 15-inch versions. The 13.5-inch version offers all four colors. In addition to the Alcantara material, the C side also offers the option of a metal keyboard. Elegant black and sandstone gold are available. This color scheme is a metal keyboard. The 15-inch version is only available in bright platinum and elegant black, and both are metal keyboards. There is no Oulan blue material.

In addition, there are obvious differences in hardware configuration. The 13.5-inch version only provides the Intel processor option, and the 15-inch version only provides the AMD processor option. In this way, although it is easier to distinguish SKUs, for some consumers, the space for choice is not so large. For example, I like the gray cobalt blue color and want a metal keyboard, there is no product that meets the conditions. Users who like large screens and keyboards made of Aulacian material are also unsatisfactory.

C face keyboard adopts island design, with white lettering and black keycap. In terms of personal experience, I feel that the feel of the metal keyboard is better than the material of Ou Jilan, the feedback is clear, and it is not easy to tire for a long time. It is also equipped with a backlight, with three levels of brightness adjustable, which is more convenient for use in low-light environments. The area of the touchpad is also relatively moderate, and the touch is smooth, that is, the sound is slightly louder when pressed, which is also a problem of previous generation products.

The Surface Laptop 3's screen still uses a 3: 2 ratio. The width of the four sides of the screen is relatively uniform, not to mention how wide it is, but it is also stubborn and has not joined the current popular "full screen" camp. If the bezel can be further narrowed, I believe the 15-inch Models can also be made smaller.

The resolution of the 15-inch PixelSense ™ display is 2496 * 1664, and the PPI of 201 is consistent with the 13.5-inch version. The surface is covered with Corning Gorilla's third-generation glass, which supports 10-point touch and Surface Pen. The display of the entire screen is excellent, and the color performance and viewing angle are satisfactory.

Interface on the left side of the fuselage

Right interface

In terms of expandability, the interface layout on the two sides of the fuselage has not changed from the previous generation, and a standard USB interface is still retained on the left side, which is still very convenient. The important point is that the USB Type-C interface with the highest voice is finally added to support data and charging. The charging interface on the right still uses the dedicated magnetic interface of the previous generation.

Hardware configuration: Custom Ryzen brings higher performance

On the hardware, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 introduced the AMD Ryzen processor for the first time, and after special customization, AMD and Microsoft engineers jointly customized the best solution according to the Surface Laptop 3 design, cooling and other conditions. Especially in terms of graphics performance, it has stronger performance.

The version of this evaluation is a basic model, equipped with AMD Ryzen 5 3580U Surface Edition processor, can be regarded as an enhanced version of Ryzen 5 3500U, focusing on strengthening the GPU graphics core, upgrading from Vega 8 to Vega 9, integration 576 stream processors. It is still based on 12nm process, Zen + architecture, 4 cores and 8 threads, the main frequency is 2.1 ~ 3.7GHz, the level 3 cache is 4MB, and the TDP is 15W.

We use the CINEBENCH R15 version to test the processor performance. Compared with the R11.5 version with a maximum of 16 cores, the R15 version can support a maximum of 256 logical cores. In addition, the new version also strengthens the inspection of shaders, anti-aliasing, shadows, lights, and reflection blur to more accurately detect CPU performance.

CINEBENCH R15 test comparison

The final CINEBENCH R15 test results of Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 are: CPU multi-core score of 145cb and single-core score of 707cb. The overall performance is excellent. Compared with the ordinary Ryzen 5 3500U, it does perform a little stronger, especially the multi-core performance , Has improved by about 10%, and the comprehensive performance has exceeded the Intel i7 8565U.

AIDA64 Cache & Memory Benchmark

In terms of memory read and write, we tested with AIDA64 Cache & Memory Benchmark. Since the machine uses DDR4 2400 memory (13.5-inch Surface Laptop 3 uses LPDDR4x memory), it performs well in memory read, write, and copy speed. , Respectively, 32921 MB / s, 31709 MB / s, and 29155 MB / s, with a delay of 117.8ns.

In terms of hard disks, the machine we tested is equipped with an SSD with a capacity of 256 GB. Through the CrystalDiskInfo hard disk detection tool, we can see the detailed information of this hard disk, including the interface, temperature, and power-on time. The SSD on the Surface Laptop 3 comes from SK Hynix. It is a M.2 2230 specification, uses a PCIe 3.0 x4 channel, and supports the NVMe 1.3 protocol. Compared with last year's Surface Laptop 2, the performance of the PCIe 3.0 x2 channel is further improved.

AS SSD Benchmark and CrystalDiskMark solid state drive test

In terms of benchmark performance, we used AS SSD Benchmark and CrystalDiskMark. This compact software can detect the random read / write speed and continuous read / write speed of the hard disk to distinguish the performance and quality of the disk. In this test, the Surface Laptop 3's continuous read and write speeds were 2006 MB / s and 827.6 MB / s. The performance of 4K random read and write was still good, with reads reaching 35.07 MB / s and writes reaching 90.73 MB / s. Taken together, the solid-state hard drive on the Surface Laptop 3 performs very well overall, reaching the standard of high-end thin and light notebooks.

PCMark 8 Work accelerate performance test

PCMark 8 is a new generation system comprehensive performance test software that can measure the comprehensive performance of various types of PC. PCmark8 includes a very large amount of test data, including seven different test links, consisting of a total of 25 independent workloads, covering all aspects of daily PC applications such as storage, computing, image and video processing, web browsing, and gaming. Evaluate our hardware capabilities. In the PCMARK 8 Work accelerate test, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 scored 4246 points in the Work accelerated item. The overall performance is worthy of recognition. The daily use for office software and image processing is completely competent.

AIDA64 stability test

In terms of stability, we use the system stability test that comes with AIDA64 to check the condition of the whole machine under continuous full load. After performing a copy test for a period of up to 30 minutes, the average CPU temperature is maintained at 61 ° C. , So there is no need to worry about the heat dissipation of Surface Laptop 3.

PCMark 8 battery life test

In terms of battery life, we use PCMark 8's built-in battery life test, which starts at 100% power. For battery performance, we choose [Longer battery life], screen brightness is 60%, and keep WiFi and Bluetooth on. We simulate the most common Work conventional usage scenario. The final test result is 7h3min and the remaining power is 20%. This result is quite good. Under full power, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 can be used for about 9 hours in a row. If combined with the energy-saving mode, the battery life can be improved.

Surface Laptop 3 charging curve

In terms of charging, the performance of the Surface Laptop 3 is significantly improved compared to the previous generation. It not only comes with a 102W power adapter as standard, but also supports fast charging. In the actual charging test, the charging speed during the entire cycle is relatively linear. In the first 60 minutes, the notebook battery can be charged from 5% to 78%, in 90 minutes, the battery can be charged to 97%, and it can be fully charged in 100 minutes. Satisfactory. In addition, although the unique magnetic charging interface is less versatile, the USB Type-C interface on the left also supports charging.

Summary: Although it is the most expensive Ryzen book, it is not perfect

After three generations of product changes, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 has been approaching perfection. Although the overall design has not changed much and is not good enough, but the addition of the C-surface metal keyboard has given some users who do not like the material of Oulan Blue to have more choices. The long-awaited USB Type-C interface from consumers has finally arrived.

In terms of hardware configuration, the Surface Laptop 3 also no longer has a short board. For users who like large screens, the new 15-inch version can fully meet the needs. Both the AMD processor option and the addition of the 10th generation Intel Core have brought stronger performance. What's more, as Microsoft's "pro-son", running Windows 10 is naturally running, and compatibility and stability are far from comparable with third-party OEMs. The addition of these features makes the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 competitive in the high-end thin and light market.

There is also an important point. The charging speed of Surface Laptop 3 has finally been raised this year, but the power adapter interface with poor versatility is still confusing. Although the Type-C interface on the left also supports charging, this makes the charging interface on the right more ribbed. It is strongly recommended that Microsoft change the charging interface on the right side of the fuselage to another USB-C port.

In summary, the Surface Laptop 3 presented by Microsoft and AMD for the first time is still very worthy of recognition. Microsoft's outstanding industrial design capabilities, strong performance obtained through joint tuning with AMD, coupled with improved SSD performance, charging performance, and even It is the easier-to-use USB Type-C interface, which has made the Surface Laptop 3 a high-end flagship notebook. It's just that the three-year design, stubborn charging interface, and psychedelic pricing range make this all less perfect, but it also makes us more full of expectations for the next generation of products.
